This General election will see a history of sorts in terms on number of Indians in the parliment. Ironically, MIC which claimed to be champion of the Indian community only contributed 3 out of 14 MPs (21.4%), while in the previous term it contributed 9 out of the 11 (81.8%) Indians.

9 candidates from MIC (3 won - 33.3% )

8 candidates from DAP (7 won - 87.5%)

5 candidates from PKR (4 won - 80%)

2 independent candidates (0 won - 0%)

Total: 24 candidates (14 won - 58.3%) and 14/21 seats won = 67%.

4 of the seats saw contest between Indian candidates - Sg Siput, Cameron Highlands, Kapar, Subang - in which MIC lost all except Cameron Highlands.

Kedah had 4 Indian candidates contesting 3 seats:

There was one straight fight between two Indian candidates (MIC versus Independent) in N25 Bukit Selambau. Mr Arumugam won N25 Bukit Selambau beating MIC’s Krishnan.

Indian indie candidate to join PKR

SUNGAI PETANI: Independent candidate V. Arumugam, 54, who won the Bukit Selambau state seat, said he will be joining the PKR “to serve the constituents better.” He is expected to be appointed an executive councillor as he is the only Indian candidate to win in Kedah.

The seat was initially supposed to be a three-cornered fight among Barisan Nasional, PKR and Arumugam, but PKR candidate Saiful Izham Ramli had his nomination papers rejected for failing to submit his statement of accounts. Arumugam obtained 13,225 votes while S. Krishnan from the MIC managed to secure 10,863 votes.

The last candidate who won on an independent ticket in peninsular Malaysia was the late Choy Chooi Yew, popularly known as C.Y. Choy, for Pengkalan Kota state seat in Penang in 1974. Choy served six years before he died in 1980 at the age of 73.

Kedah’s new government will be offering Arumugam a place in the EXCO as representative of the Indian community. He is still undecided on joining PKR. According to the Star (source):

SUNGAI PETANI: Independent candidate V. Arumugam, who won the Bukit Selambau state seat, will join PKR if the newly formed Kedah government agrees to appoint him a state executive councillor.

“I will do that in the interest of the Indian community and the people who voted for me. ”I have been approached by PKR but I have to wait for further developments,” he said.

Arumugam, 54, who left his job as trainer at the aircraft engineering section of the RMAF in Alor Star to contest the seat, defeated MIC’s S. Krishnan.

PKR’s Johari Abdul, who won the Sungai Petani parliamentary seat, said he welcomed Arumugam to join the PKR.

N9 Bagan Dalam saw a straight fight between two Indian candidates, while N16 Perai saw a 3-cornered fight. In both cases, DAP candidates won.

MIC old face Subbaiyah and newbie Krishan lost. Penang sees the entry of Karpal Singh’s son Jagdeep Singh, Prof Ramasamy and RSN Rayer.

Penang is won by opposition, so there will be Indian representatives in the state government.

N54 Hutan Melintang and N57 Sungkai saw straight fight between Indian candidates, both which were won by PKR and DAP respectively. N24 Hulu Kinta saw PKR candidate against an independent Indian candidate, but both lost to the Malay BN candidate.

Veerasingam (ex-Deputy Minister), Dr Vasan (new), Thangasvari (new) and Ramasamy (new) are the MIC candidates who lost.

Again, even though all the MIC candidates lost, the opposition took over the state, thus there will be Indian representative in EXCO.

N10 Bukit Melawati and N49 Seri Andalas saw straight fight between MIC and PKR. In both cases, PKR won. New face T Mohan lost in N16 Batu Caves, while old faces Kamalam and Parthiban lost in N10 and N49 to PKR. N24 Semenyih saw Arutchelvan of Parti Sosialis Malaysia standing under PKR, who also lost. N48 saw HINDRAF ISA detainee Manoharan beating Gerakan candidate by 7000++ majority.

Since Selangor won by new government, there are plenty of Indians to be selected into EXCO.

Since BN won Pahang, the Indian representative in the EXCO will exist in the form of MIC’s Davendran.

N7 Jeram Padang saw straight fight between MIC and PKR, and against the tide, MIC’s Mogan won. N32 Port Dickson saw 3 cornered fight among Indian candidates, won by PKR, causing state MIC chief Rajagopalu to lose.

Since NS still under BN, Indian representative in EXCO will be N7 Jeram Padang Mogan.

This is the best performance by MIC state-wise, sweeping clean all 4 seats it contested. Old face Asojan is now joined by Munusamy, Murukasvary, and Vidyananthan.

PAS fielded a non-Muslim for the first time in history, and the name that will go down in history is Kumutta Raman who stood under PKR ticket in N40 Tiram.

Again, since Johor won by BN, there will be Indians in the EXCO. Most likely Asojan.

Total of 56 Indians contested 43 seats. 26 seats were won (26/43 = 60.5%).
MIC won 7 out of 19 seats it contested (36.85)
MIC won all seats it contested in Malacca, Johor and Pahang.
MIC won a seat in Negeri Sembilan.
MIC lost all seats in Selangor, Perak, Penang and Kedah.
DAP won 12 out of 16 seats (75%).
PKR won 6 out of 15 seats (40%).
Only one of of 6 independents won (16.6%).
3 out of the 19 (15.8%) MIC candidates were female. One won.
1 out of the 16 (6.3%) DAP candidates are female. She did not win.
2 out of the 15 (13.3%) PKR candidates are female. None won.
1 out of the 6 (16.7%) independent candidates is female. She did not win.
Overall, 79 Indian candidates (Prof Ramasamy/DAP contested two seats) contested 64 seats in Parliament and states. 40 seats were won (62.5%).
